1943 – the Doomed

Following the escalated German pressure on Bulgaria to ‘deal with the Jewish matter completely’ an agreement was signed on February 22nd, 1943 for the deportation of ’20 000 Jews initially’ from the New Territories, where the word new was crossed out already in the title of the document and it applied virtually to all Jews. The agreement was signed by Bulgarian Commissary for the Jewish Question Alexander Belev, and German representative, SS Hauptsturmfürer Theodor Dannecker. Dannecker had been in Bulgaria since the beginning of January 1943 in the capacity of councilor to the German military attaché on the Jewish questionand had already been involved in the deportation of French Jews. The secret agreement so made needed the sanction of the Councils of Ministers but would not be discussed in the National Assembly.
